When does your pet need an X-ray examination?
X-rays are an essential diagnostic tool for conditions affecting the chest, abdomen and skeleton. An X-ray will often be necessary if any of the following conditions are suspected:
- heart problems
- fluid in the chest cavity or lungs
- swallowed foreign objects
- osteoarthritis
- fractures
We have a digital X-ray system, allowing us to assess the images immediately. If there is any uncertainty, the X-rays are forwarded to a specialist radiologist for further assessment.
Preparation
Most animals undergo this examination without any problems, but sometimes sedation is required in order to obtain suitable images. If sedation is necessary, it is important that your pet has not eaten for at least 12 hours before the examination.
Due to radiation safety regulations, you are not permitted to be present while the X-rays are being taken. Afterwards, we will discuss the results with you using the images that have been taken.
