To reach an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan as quickly as possible, we have a modern and well-equipped laboratory. This often allows us to obtain a great deal of information about your pet on the same day.
Blood tests
With the advanced equipment available at our clinic, we can obtain same-day information about, among other things:
- Anaemia
- Inflammation markers
- Kidney function
- Liver function
- Diabetes
- Thyroid function
Blood tests are not only important for sick animals. In older pets, it is important to detect underlying conditions at an early stage, such as chronic kidney disease. We therefore recommend geriatric screening for older animals. For patients undergoing anaesthesia at our clinic, we recommend a so-called ‘pre-anaesthetic blood test’. This assesses the organs that are important for safely processing the anaesthetic, allowing us to adjust the anaesthesia if necessary and minimise the risk of complications.
When a test cannot be performed in-house, we use a large specialised laboratory. Depending on the type of test, we usually receive the results within 1 to 5 days.
Urine tests
Urine tests provide essential information about kidney and bladder conditions and are also important for animals that drink excessively or are incontinent. Among other things, we check for blood and inflammatory cells, urinary crystals, the kidneys’ ability to concentrate urine and the presence of bacteria. In some cases, an X-ray or ultrasound examination of the abdomen may also be necessary.
Faecal tests
Faecal testing can be very important in cases of gastrointestinal problems, poor appetite or unwanted weight loss. Giardia, the most common intestinal parasite, can be detected at the clinic using a rapid test. For other tests, we will ask you to collect samples over 3 days, which we will then send to an external laboratory.
Microscopy
Microscopy is used to investigate various skin and ear conditions. In some cases, it may therefore be necessary to take a swab or skin scraping from your pet.
Tissue examination and pathology
For these tests, we use the external Idexx laboratory. When a lump is sampled or removed, or when we need to perform a bacterial culture, the sample is always sent to the laboratory.
