Expert surgery for your pet
All our veterinarians are experienced in surgery. This means you can come to us for most surgical procedures, including laparoscopic spaying. For more specialised procedures, it may be necessary to refer you to the Medisch Centrum voor Dieren in Amsterdam.
Preparation
It is essential that your dog or cat comes to the surgery on an empty stomach. Specifically, this means that they must not have eaten or drunk anything for at least 12 hours beforehand. If this is not the case, vomiting may occur when anaesthesia is induced, which can lead to choking or pneumonia.
Procedure
Because the treatment will take place under anaesthesia, your pet will be thoroughly examined beforehand. The anaesthetic protocol is always adapted to your pet’s breed, age and any medical history or existing conditions. To make the procedure as safe as possible, and because not all problems are visible externally, we also offer a pre-anaesthetic blood test. This can provide us with essential information to determine whether the anaesthesia needs to be adjusted.
During the operation, a veterinary nurse is always present to monitor your pet while under anaesthesia. Every procedure is carefully supervised using monitoring and ventilation equipment as well as gas anaesthesia.
Recovery
After the operation, your pet will be allowed to recover under supervision in a heated room. Once they are sufficiently awake and able to maintain a normal body temperature, we will call you to arrange a collection time. Further aftercare instructions will be discussed with you both verbally and in writing when you collect your pet.
Depending on the procedure, a wound check may be scheduled 7 to 14 days later, with removal of any stitches if necessary. This is completely free of charge. If you are concerned about your pet after the operation, please contact us by phone sooner.
